Some Time With… Susan Stanley: “The scenes in Hotel Amenities are passionate. I decided to have very limited contact with the other actor, so that when it came to the actual shooting we really were strangers. “

By in Some Time With...

Susan Stanley is an award-winning Irish actress from Dublin who recently played the lead role in Hotel Amenities for the Spanish Production Company Atraco Perfecto Productions. The short film was on the European festival circuit of which she won the Best Actress Award at the Malaga Film Festival 2013. Hotel Amenities has been preselected for the prestigious Spanish GOYA Awards and has been screened in London at the Portobello Film Festival 2014.

Susan also played the lead role of Sue for Atraco Perfecto Productions award winning short film Shadows in the Wind where she was nominated for best actress.

She appears in a new play called The Separation directed by Simon Evans in the Project Arts Centre, produced by Susan and writer Richard Molloy.

You can view her show-reel here.

Q As an actress, what would you say is more you, theatre or cinema?

A I love both mediums but I’d say I feel more at home with theatre because I trained at a drama school that focused primarily on classical theatre training. You can’t beat the thrill of live performance when you’re in the theatre, if you’re having a good show and the energy feels right with the audience time sort of stands still. It can be quite special. However film flexes different muscles and if you are connected to the director and the other actors it can be quite magical, but once that shot is over it’s gone for good which can be tough!

Q Talk to us about the award winning short film Shadows in the Wind. Would you like to share any good memories working with Atraco Perfecto?

A Working on Shadows in the Wind was an incredible experience, Julia Guillen Creagh (the director) saw my photo when I was in my final year at LAMDA (drama school) and she contacted the school saying she wanted to meet me. We met one day in central London and we connected immediately, there was a strong energy between us, then she came to see one of my final theatre graduating shows with her producer and they offered me the job. Working in Madrid and Asturias was amazing. The Spanish crew were so warm and talented, I felt at home immediately. They had built a set in Asturias replicating Early 20th century New York and it was fantastic. Julia (the director) and I worked so well together and as we had rehearsed in London before we travelled to Spain we had already built a working relationship, lots of trust and mutual respect.

Q Hotel Amenities will be screened this year at the Portobello Film Festival. Do you have good expectations? Read the rest of this entry »

Program   http://www.portobellofilmfestival.com/2014/aug28-kph.html

Atraco Perfecto will be screening two of their short films at Portobello Film Festival this year, Hotel Amenities and A Reflection of You. Julia Guillén Creagh and Ramón Rodríguez, entrepreneurs of this Spanish Production Company, surely will be thrilled with the results, as their short films have been awarded internationally in the past.

Hotel Amenities is the story of a man (Alex García) and a woman (Susan Stanley) that meet in a hotel room in order to have sex. It’s the first time they see each other and they are eager to do so. But things turn out to be more difficult than they expected.

Susan Stanley, playing the lead role, won the Best Actress Award at the Malaga Film Festival 2013 and for which she was been nominated for a Best Actress Award for the same project at the Islantilla Cineforum (Spain) 2013. The film was preselected on the prestigious Spanish Goya Awards.

“I am so happy for Julia that the film got pre selected for the Goya Awards. What an honour! I was very excited when I heard about the nomination, it felt surreal. Thrilled that Hotel Amenities will screen at the Portobello Film Festival. Delighted for Atraco Perfecto and Julia that the film has had such a brilliant response. They are artists who sacrifice a lot for their work so it’s wonderful that their film has a platform here in London. I hope lots of people get to see it”, said Susan to GEFilms. Into the Storm – The nerve-racking thriller of the summer

By in GEFilms

Into the Storm brings you back to the movies of the 90′s when you could not stop jumping on your seat and screaming to the actors to warn them that their end was coming. And yes, you knew back then that they could not hear you. And you know that now too, but who cares! The tornado is just behind them!

Obviously much better special effects than about 10 years ago, but there still are storm trackers, a good thrill and people documenting unexpectedly one of the biggest tornadoes ever seen touching down in the town of Silverston.

The story line is very limited, but if you want big-screen images of insanely large-scale tornadoes and big-scale devastation and disaster, then you absolutely get what you arguably came to see.

Some Time With… Teresa Tavares: “I confess the intimacy of cinema seduces me in a special way. The camera is so close, you can go so profound with a simple look. It’s amazing.”

By in GEFilms, The Engagement, The Seasons

Teresa18Teresa Tavares is a Portuguese actress who has been working extensively since 2000. She has been able to cross the line between Theatre, Cinema and Television and continues to work in every field. Her presence over the last 13 years on Portuguese television has made her a household name in Portugal.

She played the role of Soledad on Great Expectations Films The Engagement, and will take a part on The Seasons, Greg Zinger’s new feature film.

She lives now between Lisbon and London. Her work in English speaking films includes leading roles in both Collider (Jason Buttler) and Star Crossed (Mark Heller).

Q After your many years working as an actress, you had the opportunity to play roles for theatre, television and film. Which medium have you found most fulfilling?

A I love being an actress, so the fact that I’m able to work in all three mediums makes me feel more complete as an artist and as a human being, of course. You can’t separate one from another. It’s hard to say which medium fulfils me most, but I confess the intimacy of cinema seduces me in a special way. The camera is so close, you can go so profound with a simple look. It’s amazing.

Theatre is where you learn your craft. I believe that, ‘if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere’. And you reinvent yourself every day with the same words and movements. Creatively and emotionally, it’s really fulfilling. Having your audience there with you, you have to make every second count, there’s no break. All the moments that are either inspired or failed are part of creation.

TV is great too, but sometimes really hard because you have to rush. For me it was a great school, because it taught me how to be absolutely accurate working with emotions. You have to know your triggers and know yourself so well that you’re able to jump in without allowing fear or anything else to block you. You have to be really brave to be a great TV actor, working with such limited time. And then you’re literally projected in everyone’s house, and that’s an immense privilege and a great responsibility.

So, basically, I feel incredibly blessed that I get to work in the three mediums! Read the rest of this entry »

The 10th London Spanish Film Festival | 25th Sept – 5th Oct

By in GEFilms

Venues: Ciné Lumière and Instituto Cervantes

Prices: from £3 for the older films, and £10 (£8 conc.) for the newer screenings.

For the full programme go to: www.londonspanishfilmfestival.com

This is their 10th year anniversary and for 10 days they will offer you film screenings, talks, book presentations and Q&As with filmmakers and actors.

Tres bodas de más (Three Too Many Weddings) will be their opening film. A comedy that will have you in stitches, starring Inma Cuesta, Martiño Rivas, Quim Gutiérrez, Rossy de Palma and Paco León.

Scientist Ruth is publicly dumped by her boyfriend at her boss’s wedding and, to her chagrin, a few months later receives invitations to the nuptials of him and two other ex-boyfriends. At the first of these weddings she falls for Jonás, a plastic surgeon, only to learn at the next wedding that he has lied to her. Ruth’s life seems to be a complete disaster, although fortunately her new intern is there to give her moral support. Hilarious at times and always entertaining, this comedy is about a woman who questions her love-life, while also discovering what she wants from life.

Don’t worry, English subtitles will be available for those not so familiar with the Spanish language. The film will be introduced from a surprise guest still to be confirmed. And if Spanish food also has a place in your heart, you can’t miss the complimentary glass of wine and Spanish ham, courtesy of Spanish Master Ham, from 7.45pm, just before the movie starts on the 25th of September.

You can’t also miss Las Brujas Zugarramurdi (Witching and Bitching) by Alex de la IglesiaTres Sesenta by Alejandro Ezcurdia; or Historias de Lavapies by Ramon Luque. Highly recommended! Read the rest of this entry »

Some Time With… Christian McKay: “As for method, it’s simply what my three-year old does so naturally, just pretending. Unfortunately I don’t do it as well or as naturally as my son, so I have to work at it.”

By in GEFilms, Some Time With..., The Engagement
BAFTA awarded actor Christian McKay has some exciting new projects nearly out of the oven. Well known for his roles in Me and Orson Welles,  You Will Meet a Tall Dark StrangerTinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Rush and The Engagement, among other titles. One of his new movies, The Creditors, which will be released probably in 2015,  tells the story of a love triangle that is unraveled when a young painter is approached by an admirer who eases him into making sense of his relationship with his wife.Me-and-Orson-Welles-premiere
Fresh and funny, as always, Christian answered to all our questions:
Q Let’s talk about your new film, The Creditors. I understand it is a UK/Spain co-production. Was it mostly filmed in Spain or in the UK? Do you generally enjoy filming more in the UK or abroad?
I completed Creditors in mid-April in Madrid. I’ve just wrapped my ‘newest’ film, working title ChickLit, in beautiful Norfolk. It has the most marvellous cast, including my heroes (and new best friends) Dame Eileen Atkins and John Hurt. Lovely thing to meet your heroes and for them to turn out be everything and more than you could wish for. I have had the opposite reaction too, but should probably keep the megalomaniac’s name a secret. This film is a comedy in the great Ealing tradition and I had a wonderful time making it. Creditors, a modern adaptation of the August Strindberg classic, is a UK/Spain co-production. Filmed mostly in Spain, but with some scenes shot in London, I play a cuckolded husband out for vengeance. My ex-wife is played by my dear pal Andrea Deck, who played my daughter last year in Bernard Rose’s The Devil’s Violinist. I tell her, quite seriously, she’s due to play my grandmother next. And to complete this incredibly involved long answer to your question, I don’t have a preference where I’m filming. I love filming.

The Soundtrack of your life.

By in GEFilms

Since 1894 when The Edison Company started experimenting the union of sight and sound, the world of motion pictures changed radically, bringing up emotions from the public and creating new memories like never before.

Even the first silent movies belong to a soundtrack that transports us just to the scene every time you hear it.

Pretty Woman wouldn’t be the same without Roy Orbison main theme, as well as Dirty Dancing wouldn’t be one of the old favourites after nearly 30 years and not as many people would remember that ‘nobody puts Baby in corner’ without Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes’ The Time of my life. And anybody that hears the Tubular Bells theme will make a run back home and look under the bed before going to sleep. Fact. Read the rest of this entry »

April Pearson – Home For Christmas, her new feature film

By in GEFilms

HFC_AprilPearson

We know it is far too early for Christmas, but this new film starring April Pearson caught our attention. Since working with April at The Engagement (Great Expectations Films), we just can’t get enough of her!

Home For Christmas is the new feature film from Jump Start Productions, formed in 2009 by Jamie Patterson and Nathalie Grace in Brighton, aiming to promote their city as well as introducing young and emerging talent.

The story is based on a book of the same name from award winning author Cally Taylor, written back on 2011.

A charming feel good movie that tells the story of Beth Prince, who has always loved fairy tales and now she feels like she’s finally on the verge of her own happily ever after; a dream job in a charming independent cinema by the seaside and a gorgeous boyfriend. There’s just one problem – no man has ever told her they love her. Desperate to hear their crucial three little words for the first time Beth takes matters into her own hands – and wishes she hasn’t.april-pearson

April Pearson (Skins, The Engagement) plays the role of Beth, along with Karl Davies (Emmerdale, Game of Thrones) as Matt. Also Lucy Griffiths (BBC’s Robin Hood, True Blood), Derren Nesbiit (Where Eagles Dare, Flawless), and Amanda Piery (The Underwater Realm, City of Dreamers) are part of the cast.

The filming finished last month and as you can see on their twitter, now are ready to edit after 2 weeks and a 24 hours shoot session.
